MRCPCH Exam
The MRCPCH (membership) exam has three theory exams, which are computer-based and taken in an exam centre. They are Foundation of Practice (FOP), Theory and Science (TAS) and Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP); they can be taken in any order.
Foundation of Practice (FOP)
FOP assesses a candidate’s knowledge, understanding and clinical decision making abilities. The exam is part of both the MRCPCH and Diploma of Child Health (DCH) exams.

Theory and Science (TAS)
TAS tests basic scientific, physiological and pharmacological principles of clinical practice, and of evidence-based practice. It is part of the MRCPCH exams.
- Typically 80 questions (SBAs – 70 questions, EMQs – 10 questions)
- 2.5 hours (150 minutes)
Candidates can apply to take FOP and TAS on the same day; FOP is always in the morning, and TAS in the afternoon. The difficulty levels of the FOP/TAS exam papers are set to guarantee that all candidates have reached the required standard of someone entering specialist training. Requirements:
Theory examinations can be taken in any order and are non-sequential. Candidates must pass the three theory examinations before they can sit the MRCPCH Clinical examination. Candidates do not need pass English language tests. However, it is recommended that your English language proficiency be equivalent to IELTS Level 7.
